CLAYground: Claye Bowler - 'Secured'

  • CLAY 1, 2 Regent St, Leeds LS2 7QA United Kingdom (map)

CLAYground is a monthly chance to simply see and seriously play.

We throw the doors wide open on the first Friday of every month! Come to cavort with us. Bring your curious pals and your great chat and observe new artistic ideas and experiments come to life.

This month:

Secured - Claye Bowler

Addressing the erasure of queer and trans narratives and objects in museum collections and archives, this work recitifies; exploring accessioning, packing and body as archive.

Bring your queer objects - photographs, locks of hair, ring pull from your date’s drink, a battered doc marten, faggot badge, carabiner, your ex’s beanie - where there will be the opportunity for you to pack and preserve them to industry quality.

Claye uses his experience as a Museum Registrar (with roles at Leeds Museums & Galleries, the Royal Armouries and Tate) to inform his art practice aesthetically and politically, as well as stealing all the skills. His recent work has focused on his transitioning body but he’s bored of that so archives are back baby.

Upcoming exhibitions include Henry Moore Institute 2022, Yorkshire Sculpture Park 2022.

Recent work - Yonder Gallery 2019-22, Yorkshire Trans Choir 2018-22, UKNA (Attenborough Arts Centre) 2022, Yorkshire Sculpture International 2021, Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival 2020-21.

----------------------------------------

CLAYground pilot series (August- October 2021) was made possible with support from Leeds Inspired to address the lack of non-hierarchical spaces for live artists and those interested in artworks to co-exist and test things out.

  • The runtime of all events at CLAY are an estimation.

We can't give an exact runtime for the majority if our events as often they are experimental in nature.

Work in our Programme can be anywhere from 40 - 90mins unless stated otherwise.

Additionally performances are relaxed, meaning you can leave the performance space at anytime if needed.

  • This is event is wheelchair accessible. We have done what we can to make the space accessible by including a wheelchair friendly portaloo on the floor of the event space. We also have 2 gender-neutral toilets that are down a flight of stairs that is 12 steps. Unfortunately, there is no lift in our building. The rest of the building is on one floor. Unless stated this is a relaxed performance. If you need any more information please check our venue info page here.
